Millions of people with dietary restrictions fear getting sick from food allergens that are nearly impossible to avoid, especially when eating out. The incidence of food allergies has increased over 50% among children from 1997-2011. Eating safely and stress-free is a growing challenge for millions around the world. 6SensorLabs is developing products for consumers to enable more informed and healthier eating decisions.

“The potential for a product such as this is great. There is tremendous anxiety associated with dining outside of the home for many people on restricted diets. A product that can provide reliable, accurate and easily accessible information will be a welcome tool to consumers with dietary restrictions and to the food service/manufacturing industry,” says Amy Burkhart, MD, RD, medical advisor to the Celiac Community Foundation of Northern California.

6SensorLabs has spent the past year developing a chemistry-based technology that detects gluten ten times faster than comparable methods as well as a small, beautiful device that consumers can use to test their food. The gluten sensor is expected to be on the market next year, serving the estimated 20 million gluten-free consumers in the US. Users can rapidly sample food at home, at restaurants, and when traveling to detect trace amounts of gluten within 2 minutes. This one-of-a-kind device pairs with 6Sensor’s smartphone app, allowing users to share test data, connect with other health-conscience consumers, and provide critical insights for smarter and healthier eating decisions. In the future, 6SensorLabs plans to release tests for dairy, peanuts and other allergens that are compatible with this device.

“We are leading this round at 6SensorLabs because we love the team and believe, as they do, that food allergies and more broadly food safety, is an underserved, growing problem globally. Today, there is simply no easy, fast way consumers can test for allergens in the food they eat. For the 15 million people with food allergies in the US, and many folds more in the world, this can be inconvenient to downright deadly,” says Yves Sisteron, partner and co-founder at Upfront Ventures.
