A Few Thoughts on Troublesome Zero (Tanton Mathematics)
The concept of zero is hard! And if you really think about it, the mathematics of zero is also hard! Here is a quick overview of some troubles with troublesome zero. (Can we help our students?)

it seemed more like an abuse of word choice. literally the equation means
”ONLY 3, repeated in 4 groups”, not, ”4 groups of 3” opening the hole.
it doesn’t say much about the math itself, I think. It should invalidate
some kind of mathematical tenet to include something if its verbally not
excluded..
My thoughts about “zero” were limited to; “if you memorize a few
guidelines, zero allows complicated arithmetic to be performed with a
pencil and a piece of paper. You don’t need zero on an abacus, simply no
bead.
9:05 That’s a dangerous argument. By that logic also have to concede that
3*4=15. In 15, you obviously also have 3 groups of 4, never mind that you
have 3 dots left over.
how about -(4-4) = (-1)(4-4) = (-1)(0) = 0
This camera is fucking shit!
The camera person is useless.
16:30: camera man sleeping? 😀
You lost me at Directional Derivatives.. lol
Lecture 11, I assume, was the lecture during which students were taking
Midterm Exam #1, in which case there would be no taping. M.C. Miller
thank you very much for the lectures i just wish the topic of the lectures
were mentioned in the descriptions
The sound vanishes at 1.11:30
man, i would love to go to his office hours.
where is lecture 11 ?
@LightingInvoker Then you’re probably watching the wrong lecture
@LightingInvoker And the sad thing is that this stuff probably isn’t that
difficult 😉 I’m just not a math person. I don’t know why this was
suggested to me, lol.
why still teachers use chalk? isnt it better with markers and acrilic
boards?
I initially wondered about Lecture 11 as well. Since youtube doesn’t permit
links in posts, please try: A browser search on “Edward Frenkel’s homepage”
Click on “Watch the lectures on YouTube” This lists 30 lectures with
Lectures 11, 21 & 27 missing. Lectures 10 & 20 precede the first & second
exam, Lecture 26 precedes Thanksgiving vacation and Lecture 30 precedes the
final. Evidently, the first & second exams and Thanksgiving were counted as
lectures.
thank you so much for these lectures!!
The sound vanishes at 1.11:30… but returns 1.13:53
i can learn calculus for FREE. thanks Berkeley !!
Thank you.
