Chemical Curiosities: Surprising Science and Dramatic Demonstrations
Professor Chris Bishop, presenter of the 2008 Royal Institution Christmas Lectures, leads us through a spectacular tour of the curious, and sometimes surpris…

My new subscription goes to Royal Institution. This hour long video feels
like rather short when I watched it.
Chemistry is not a science… Is more similar to magic ( do you really
believe in enthalpy ? ), but this video is absolutely amazing!

This is an amazing one hour long journey down the rabbit hole 🙂

What’s rather appalling to me is that these demonstrations were part of
grade school science classes when I was a child. I would have thought
everyone knows how this works – and the lecturer isn’t even bothering to
try and explain what a charge transfer complex is – which is the reason for
the color changes.
did he make a mistake between liquid hydrogen and liquid nitrogen?
*Cool Chemistry lecture at the Royal Institute*
+Jen Fett watch this with Julie, I’m sure you both will find this pretty
cool. Everyone else same goes for you. Yeah it’s an hour long, but it
goes by fast, and it’s fun to watch.
that all the cool stuff you can do with chemistry, the rest 99.9999999% is
boring :p
I can’t believe the video has 65 thumbs down.
Wouldn’t a ball at the top of a hill rolling down a hill be actually moving
from a lower energy level to a higher energy level, gravitationally
speaking?
The answer is that most chemical reactions go forwards and backwards at the
same time. We call it an eqilibrium when they’re going backwards and
forwards at the same time. For a reaction to go ‘backwards’, you must put
energy into it… this happens all the time. Consider how we get molecules
that spontaneously turn into others… how did we get the original
molecules in the first place? Energy is needed, most commonly from the sun.

sh you were my chemistry teacher
damn an h bomb is no joke
lightsaber style
Amazing video!
Jolly good show.
british Kevin Spacey
I like this guy. Lecturing to children, but no “magic tricks”.
Far better entertainment for children than going to the circus and get
Clown-phobia.
best lecture i ever had
Jolly good! Although I think he may have left out some explanation about
endothermic reactions.
Brilliant lecture!
be aware some breaking bad spoilers down in the comments
Kiara’s a damn sniper xD
