While I love Feynman, i disagree with him on math, math sets the foreground
of logic and reason. and in doing so creates a language, a language in
which physicists can later use for construction. But not only physicists
but every scientific discipline needs mathematics to some level. think of
a field of science as a program on your desktop, the source code of it is
the mathematics, and in developing mathematics the code becomes more
accurate, more diverse and simple to write. Any great level of
understanding of physics and how it works depends entirely on the
mathematics used to explain it.

Feynman couldn’t have been more wrong at 4:30. Pure mathematics is rarely
about pure reasoning, but exactly like the “seat of the pants” feeling that
he claims physicists have. Physicists just don’t have experiences or a feel
for how things operate in a purely mathematical scenario, but pure
mathematicians do have those feelings. The most brilliant theorems are not
derived by cold, hard logic but a stroke of genius insight and educated
guesses based on one’s previous experience with the mathematics.
Physics is just a branch of Mathematics

usual sense of humour :)
Mathematicians versus Physicists, can we see the analogy in game design?
The physical projection of rules vs the purely theoretical. Crunch vs
storytelling.
Thoughts? I see many games as following the mathematicians focus. Coherent
in themselves and valid within their own realm, but a bit detached from
actual reality. Some become very large rule constructs themselves.
Yet the lack of realism is not due to the simplicity or complexity of the
rules and underlying math, dice rolls, etc., but rather to the detachment
from the players experienced or expected reality.
Ironic from someone who was great at mathematics.
Mathematicians play a game where they make up the rules themselves and they
spend their entire lives making everything more complicated.
Physicists play a game where the rules are given to us and we spend our
entire lives trying to make everything simplier

Feynman was humorous with his silly concept of a “real world.”

Math is the same in any possible universe. Physics is the physics only of
our actual universe. Math is about only itself. Physics is about the world.
The Man!
He is so funny, and so intelligent. An awesome combination
(via Aniket) Feynman’s take on mathematicians vs physicists.

Here’s a short video of Richard Feynman talking about the role of
Mathematicians for Physicists and the nature of the differences between
them.
Richard Feynman mentions C.P. Snow and the Two Cultures at the end of this
video and if you would like to read what scientist, and novelist C.P. Snow
actually wrote, his presentation is now available online:

I am a good mathematics student – I study every day – I struggle with the
abstractions of vector calculus and differential equations, discrete math,
and real analysis. But, when I started taking physics classes to enrich my
ideas concerning natural philosophy – man, did my head get a painful
upgrade, and a realization of what RF is talking about here – I don’t
necessarily like it, but I understand and agree.
Err… who am I then?

One of the great talks given by Richard Feynman.

When was this filmed?
Does anybody know where this took place? Was this talk given at Columbia?
Cal Tech? Or some sort of seminar perhaps? I’m just a bit curious.
maths > physics
Didn’t this man have a hand in making WMD in the second world war?
Most of them in audience have specs was this lecture in 3D…? :-P
