Game Developers GG|Interacitive Change the Game for Common Core
Vancouver, WA (PRWEB) February 19, 2015
Aristotle once said, “Those who know, do. Those that understand, teach.” When it comes to game design and programming, video game studio turned curriculum developer GG|Interactive is doing both and they are putting themselves in your high-schoolers’ classrooms.
“One of the goals of the Common Core standard is to cross-pollenate subjects such as math and biology and so often the attempts to do so are contrived and forced,” says Eric Preisz, CEO of GG|Interactive, “Game development is a nexus of so many sciences. And kids want to learn it.”
GG|Interactive’s take on the modern classroom is that teachers are understandably lacking experience in high tech subjects like game development. Their approach is to build a course that students can take at their own pace, guided by GG|Interactive employees who deliver all of the lectures in video form.
“We believe that students benefit from having industry influences in their classroom,” says Preisz. “The knowledge we can share is in professional game design and coding. It may appear as though we are trying to teach game development, but our real motivation is to teach computer science and software production, skillsets that are the most underserved in our country.”
GG|Interactive validates that philosophy with their Computer Science in Game Design curriculum, currently offered for free to educators and students for their first year using the course. It is the first time such a high school curriculum has been developed by a working video game studio.
“Teaching what we know about game design and game programming has become our obsession,” Preisz continues. “Putting it out there for a free trial is a way to validate ourselves and get it into the hands of teacher who can then add their expertise as educators.”
Computer Science in Game Design is now available free for the first year. The curriculum covers game design, programming and problem solving to high-school students and colleges.
GG|Interactive is a subsidiary of GarageGames, a successful video game studio with over 14 years’ experience in games and technology. Besides developing video games for Microsoft’s Xbox, GarageGames has developed educational games for online colleges and entertainment technology for the World’s Most Famous amusement park. The company is perhaps best known among gamers for creating and developing the Torque game engines. These engines are used by thousands of game-makers who are part of a thriving community of game designers and programmers that share their work and knowledge with like-minded people.
