So sad. This day in age it is silly to build buildings of this scale is
silly. The chemicals needed to keep the woods preserved over the years
makes it pointless. Also, a chemistry building made from wood? Was the
sprinkler systems installed yet?
don’t cut trees for buildings .hope they learned from that fire
I have a dilemma. If I like a video called “Huge Fire at our Chemistry
Building” would that mean that I show support to the channel or that I like
the idea of a fire destroying a chemistry lab? It’s the classic problem of
whether you should click like or dislike under a video/comment describing
an unpleasant event. What do you think?
This may be in bad taste but, I wonder how much carbon was released from
the burning of a carbon neutral building?
I bet the fire was caused by rags and linseed oil. These are common on
building sites where wood is used and for some reason builders just can’t
seem to wrap their heads around the fact that a rag soaked in linseed oil
will combust by itself, if left to its own devices. Fires caused in this
manner usually erupt several hours after work has ended.
Why would you make a chemistry building out of wood? A fire is bound to
happen, especially with all the controlled fires they have in a lab. It
could turn quickly into a uncontrolled fire
It looks like a lot of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide was released when
this building burned. Given that the carbon based fuels used to get the
wood, process the wood, deliver the wood, get the constructors to the site
in carbon based fuelled vehicles and then also fuel the fire fighting and
news vehicles in the end, how much carbon was put into the atmosphere to
try to study Carbon Neutral Science?
Who’s going to pay for the new building?
Bet you wish it was charcoal neutral now, just kidding and all the best
guys, love ya work!!!
Its not carbon neutral anymore. lots of toxins in the atmosphere now.
Forget this carbon malarkey. Focus on real science.
so much for the carbon neutral thing.
20million? And they can even build it again. Rich students?
So sad never knew this happened and I am in UK a listen to evening news.
Don’t know how I missed it Scottish vote took all the news. Even though was
for sure a NO vote! I feel sorry to 45% of scots that are disappointed!
Makes you ask is democracy is the best way forward.
Of course, all of the armchair Youtube architects and engineers come out of
the wood works to tell real architects and engineers what they should or
shouldn’t have built their 20 million dollar building out of. Yeah, I’m
sure if they had only listened to the people making Youtube comments, this
wouldn’t have happened.
To anyone not following the news: The cause has now been established as a
horde of dissatisfied Scots on their march to Westminster. Lead by William
Wallace descendant (also named William), the horde “accidentally” set fire
to the building after what appears to be an unsuccessful raid on the lab
(the causes of which is unknown). William claims no responsibility for the
attack, and only has the following to say: “Westminster better watch out!”
Hopefully it will be reason to make next building more fireproof..
not so carbon neutral now is it.
No, im actually quite saddened for you, but this could be a blessing in
disguise.
i am so glad no one got hurt and that no equipment/materials/lab work got
lost. Guess it´s not a carbon neutral building anymore tho. ;)
and that’s why you don’t build out of wood…
you just don’t. ever.
Well, that can’t be great as far as budget and schedule goes…
Hopefully the investigation provides useful data!
glad nobody was hurt. why not build something out of stone next time…
ancient buildings made out of this stuff survived for millennia through
wars and fires. wood huts not so much
Huge Fire at our Chemistry Building – Periodic Videos
The new rebuilt lab should be called Phoenix lab. ;)
Why the heck did they build it out of wood? Might as well have built it out
of oily rags…
