Kendall Hunt Extends its Commitment to Developing Curriculum for High-Ability Learners
Dubuque, IA (PRWEB) November 30, 2014
Kendall Hunt Publishing Company, the leader in gifted education curriculum, has announced the publication of five new titles for use with gifted and talented students in grades 3-8. Offering two new units for mathematics and three for language arts, the publisher now offers 32 specialized curriculum units for advanced learners across four disciplines – mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies.
“Kendall Hunt has always been known as the premier publisher of programs for high-ability learners,” said Charley Cook, vice president of K-12 publishing. “These new units will enhance an already strong roster of products and mark the start of the next phase of our ongoing commitment to the teachers, students, and parents who make up the gifted and talented educational community.”
The gifted mathematics units were developed as part of Kendall Hunt’s Project M3: Mentoring Mathematical Minds series for grades 3-6, a six-time winner of the National Association for Gifted Children’s curriculum studies network award. Each new unit is written to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and addresses all eight of the Standards for Mathematical Practice, which play a major role in unit investigations. The units are not designed for specific grade levels, but can be flexibly used with students who demonstrate advanced mathematics ability.
How Big is Big? introduces students to numbers from 1,000 to 1,000,000 using a variety of models and operations. They will apply their previous understanding of place value and extend their learning of the relative size of numbers in each place up to one million.
Tenth Street Pet Sanctuary provides an introduction to the decimal numeration system, focusing on conceptual understanding and operations with decimals. Students will learn how the powers of ten are used to create decimals and understand the role of the decimal point as the marker for the end of whole numbers.
The new language arts titles were developed by the Center for Gifted Education at the College of William and Mary, whose curriculum materials have been recognized for excellence by both NAGC and the US Department of Education. The new units focus on the concepts of perspective, courage, and justice, and are designed for use with students in grades 4-5 and 7-8. The units also support the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and its College and Career Anchor Standards for Reading.
Perspectives (Grades 4-5) helps students recognize that people develop their own perspectives based on their experiences in the world around them. The unit explores social and historical issues by studying people, historical time periods and events, and students own lives. Students are given the chance to compare and contrast their own lives with those of others.
Courage: Connections and Reflections (Grades 7-8) explores social and historical issues by studying people, historical time periods and events, and students’ own lives. Novels, short stories, poetry, art, and music will be the avenues for addressing unit goals. Students will be given numerous opportunities for reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
The Pursuit of Justice (Grades 7-8) offers high-ability learners the opportunity to explore the concept of justice in a variety of contexts. They will explore ideas of fairness in literature, history, current events, and their own lives through a wide variety of media and genres. Unit lessons encourage critical thinking and analysis and offer ample opportunities to practice writing and oral communication.
“With these additions to our gifted programs, Kendall Hunt continues to position itself as the publisher of choice for educators who work with high-ability students,” Cook said. “Over the next 18 months, we look forward to publishing additional math and language arts units as we continue our commitment to meeting the specialized needs of advanced learners.”
