NAPW honors Rebecca Ernst as a 2014 Professional Woman of the Year. Ms. Ernst is recognized with this prestigious distinction for leadership in business and community service. As the largest, most-recognized networking organization of professional women in the country, spanning virtually every industry and profession, the National Association of Professional Women is a vibrant networking community with over 600,000 members and nearly 300 Local Chapters.

 

“I work as a Project Control Specialist but my real passion is for my community and work in emergency management,” says Ms. Ernst.

 

During the day, Ms. Ernst is a dedicated employee at Spectrum Comm, Inc., writing proposals and expertly managing projects. But after her workday is over, she starts her second shift serving the community where she has lived and worked for all of her life. “I was born and raised here. I work here, live here and went to school here,” says Ms. Ernst. “I enjoy volunteering in my community and helping people through my work. I am now working to get back into emergency management full-time.”

 

Previously, Ms. Ernst worked as a forensic technician. A challenging career, she said the work was nothing like the popular television programs portray. “It’s a lot slower paced. Crimes can’t be solved in one hour,” she adds. Ms. Ernst continues to fuel her passion for emergency management by volunteering with the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue as an Emergency Medical Technician. She also volunteers her time as a Disaster Team Captain with the American Red Cross. “We help families after a disaster occurs, such as a house fire. We assist them with emergency financing and housing,” she says. Ms. Ernst, who is currently working toward obtaining her doctorate in emergency management, has an M.S. in Government Administration and Emergency Management from the University of Phoenix and a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from Christopher Newport University.
