Cancer researchers in Italy are reporting the case of a man who contracted mesothelioma after years of using an asbestos filter to purify wine. Surviving Mesothelioma has just posted an article on the case. Click here to read it now.

Doctors with the Institute for Study and Prevention of Cancer in Florence say the case is the first case where a mesothelioma patient’s only known exposure to deadly asbestos was in the winemaking industry.

Authors Alessandro Nemo and Stefano Silvestri describe the process this way: “The wine was filtered to remove impurities; the filter was created by dispersing in the wine asbestos fibers followed by diatomite while the wine was circulating several times and clogging a prefilter made of a dense stainless steel net.”

The study, published in the Annals of Occupational Hygiene, contained no evidence that any asbestos ended up in the wine, but does highlight the fact that this mesothelioma-causing mineral was once common in a wide range of industries.

“Mesothelioma is an illness often associated with asbestos mining or industrial jobs, but this case is a reminder that this toxin may be even more pervasive than we realize,” says Alex Strauss, Managing Editor for Surviving Mesothelioma.
