Cancer researchers in Japan have identified chromosomal abnormalities that appear to have an impact on where mesothelioma develops in the body. Click here to read Surviving Mesothelioma’s new article on this important research.

Doctors with Nara Medical University report finding genetic differences between people with pleural mesothelioma (on the lung lining) and those with peritoneal mesothelioma (on the abdominal lining).

“Our study suggests that the pathway of the genetic abnormality might vary between pleural and peritoneal malignant mesothelioma,” writes lead investigator Dr. Maiko Takeda with the University’s Department of Diagnostic Pathology.

To conduct the study published in the Journal of Clinical Pathology, Dr. Takeda and his colleagues analyzed tissue samples from 54 mesothelioma patients.

“Understanding how genetics may impact mesothelioma development is an important step toward developing more effective gene-based treatments,” says Surviving Mesothelioma’s Managing Editor, Alex Strauss.
