math is the language that is used to describe the things around us and also
break them down for what they really are math can be used to describe for
what there are no words to describe in any other language and with the
application of math the possibilities are pretty much infinite i mean learn
how to chop wood or learn math and build a machine to chop the wood for me
duh self explanatory im gone
Multiplication is just a short form of performing addition or substraction
with numbers:
3 * 2 = 0 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 6
3 * -2 = 0 – 2 – 2 – 2 = -6
This is convenient, cause imagine, you want to add the number two 1000
times. You can simple write 1000 * 2 instead of 2 + 2 + 2 ….(1000 times;)
By putting a – sign to 3 you invert this operation, for addition this
means, you take the two three times away:
-3 * 2 = 0 – 2 – 2 – 2 = -6
The substraction is also inverted, instead of taking the 2 three times
away, it is added.
-3 * -2 = 0 + 2 + 2 + 2
This is exactly what happens in nature. Just think of a bathtub and a
bucket (2 liter).
so according to you, math is random and meaningless. just assume anything:
wrong. if it has no basis in reality, it means nothing to me
I do not think you can say that “and” means multiplying and “with” adding.
Adding and multiplying have to do with counting together, while “and/with”
a conjuntors that do not have to do with counting (“Paris and Rom”).
Thanks for your explanation.
Why do mathematicians agree that the consequence of multiplying negative
numbers is to change them to positive numbers.
Why couldn’t mathematicians have agreed that multiplying whole negative
numbers leads to equal or larger negative numbers, mirroring the properties
of positive numbers.
Is there some intrinsic reason which is self evident and if so what is it?
Multiplying is so misleading.. (Hmmm, Hear me out for a little…)
Logically speaking, you could never take two negatives and make them a
positive. For one thing, from the beginning a “negative” will always be
something that you do NOT have so taking two of something ( and multiplying
it for that matter..) that you “do not obtain”, can never become something
that you Do have.. This is why I’m always finding myself hating math
because of some “theory” that causes you to override “natural logistics”..
The Language of Mathematics (35): why 2 negatives make a positive
consistant with English? you lost me there.
Thank you for sharing this. However, how can this be explained using
specific mathematical concepts and terms? I understand your analogy
regarding language, but the explanation lacked a conceptual breakdown using
mathematical terms.
you are so confused math and science and nature all follow the same rules
we invented – numbers when we invented trading almost sure of it
You’re very welcome 🙂
Many words, but basically it’s the question about multiplication and
negative numbers. About the latter, ask the people about dept 😉
haha true, but then again, they could end up becoming a couple. Neither
Math nor English are complete, and very seldom is something perfectly
translated from one language to another. Definitely an accurate statement,
“Math and English can be incompatible at times.”
@chychochycho Thanks for the reply. I fit in niether category I’m afraid. I
came across this by accident. I’m pretty sure I’m out of my depth already.
Good luck to all of you – whatever you’re on about. x
Well, it is just an inherent property of the language, and yes, you are
correct, you can prove anything this way. This video is not for people who
are well versed in the language of math, it’s for people who are having a
hard time with it. The simplest answer to this question is given at 1:47
into the video. Just like the English language, where a double negative
makes a positive, so it is with math. It’s really that simple… the rest
of the video is a song and a dance.
I think the language of maths is not taught enough. I can tell you’re very
passionate about maths and when you explain other things on your videos,
you do it effortlessly. This makes me think that the language of
mathematics, is much more harder to explain. I don’t agree with Deanbks,
coz u have helped a lot of people with your vids and what has he done.
Thanks bro.
can you answer this….pls… move one digit to make the statement true….
101-102=1
Now, think about this one: if multiplying by -1 rotates the number line by
180 degrees, then multiplying by the square root of -1 would rotate the
number line by 90 degrees (because the sq root of -1 times itself is -1).
The sq root of -1 is abbreviated as “i”, or the “imaginary” part of a
complex number. But there is nothing imaginary about it. You see, a complex
number is simply a 2 dimensional number. Instead of living on a “line” it
lives in a vector described by 2 lines: the x and y “axis”
Sorry, but your explanation is wrong and misleading. Natural languages are
all based on conventions. But mathematical statements are logically derived
from the axioms which are underlying them. Let’s explain why (-1) x (-1) =
1: We can assume the more general case: (-n)x(-n)=nxn. For (-n), we can
extract (-1)(n). -> (-1)(n)x(-n)=nxn /:n -> (-1)x(-n)=n. /:(-1) ->
(-n)=(-n). /:(-1) -> n=n, which is obviously true!
Actually, many natural languages don’t have a double negative equaling a
positive. As for my explanation, it wasn’t meant to be a “math” proof, just
something to help those that are having a hard time grasping the concept.
I’ve found that it has helped some of my students, so thought it was worth
putting out the vid. Hope that clarifies why this video is up.
The demonstration above is by far the most illogically derived and
mathematically void I could have imagined. You cannot simply write down to
a question ‘neg.neg=pos’ well I know that -1.-1=1. This is in effect what
you did with the couples analogy-yet ten times worse as the use of single
and couple was simply crazy. i.e. you effectively stated let A=-1 and B=1.
A.A=B. The use of couples or singles to back it up does not give any ANY
kind of support to the example, maybe only slight of hand.
My pleasure, Susan.
okay i give, how do you do it?
Based on your example: “Matt and Sara go to a party”. Now the statement
does not imply that they go together as a couple . yet the “and” would give
us a value of “+1” – Simple to say Math and English can be incompatible at
times.
Thats a nice video but theres just one question you didnt answer: WHY -1 *
-1 = +1. Thx
very good math teacher from what I saw here
well the blue line is not a function! how any body else has not pointed
this out i dont know? a function cannot go back on its self! i,e beyond the
vertical line! that should be elementary stuff.
Thank you for posting! Great lecture!
In order to learn all this stuff, one has to sacrifice good times with hot
chicks. That’s a high price to pay.
i love the lecturer. he is godlike. such good explanations… thank you
very much for uploading this. it helped me greatly 🙂
thanks! your video probably saved me a weeks work!
this guy is awesome 😀
How can i go from being a D student in math, to coming to a point where i
understand this video?
fuck this
