Thou Shall Not Fear Classical Literature

I started with A tail of two cities. I’m not sure if it was the best
choice, but now I love classic literature.
…I love your vocabulary. I love your accent. And my lord… I love your
hair.
Subscribing. 😀
Thrilled that you made this! I’m sure many a reader will discover their
love of classical literature because of this video. Gorgeous. 🙂
Oh, bless you for this video! Here’s hoping you change some minds!
This is so great! But I have to say that I truly hated Aristophanes works,
way too many fart jokes. Sophocles is my cup of tea (tragedy over comedy
any day).
When I started picking up the classics on my own, I was pleasantly
surprised! My fave is Sophocles’ plays.
I read my first piece of Classical Lit recently and it was a lot easier
than I thought it would be! Really excited to try some more!
Really cool video! I’ll have to check some out :)
Loved this! I love classical literature, but I had not heard of some of
these so they are now on my wish list!
I’ve never read any ancient literature- do you have any recommendations for
a good place to start? Something not too heavy-going but enjoyable? Or if
that’s too hard a question (haha), which are your favourites? 🙂 x
I have Daphnis and Chloé by Longus on my shelves and I thought about
reading it this summer 🙂 I’m not afraid of my classical lit per say, some
of my favourite authors are from this period, but I have not read a lot of
these works and I should.
I tried to read Aristophane’s comedies… Actually, I read the first line
of one of them and “fart”… HAHAHA. The Greeks were quite bold in their
jokes. We invented nothing, really.
I had to study Ars Amatoria, and it always makes me laugh when I read some
passages. It’s so funny and absurd!
Thank you for the video :). We should definitely read more classical
literature.
This has definitely inspired me! I’ve always been wary of reading classical
lit because it seems so academic and quite frankly, scary but I shall
definitely try to pick up a couple of the examples you provided! :-)
I’ve recently been reconsidering my perception of classical literature.
Maybe at some point in the future I’ll revisit this video to find some
recommendations. Also, this video was just adorable. Thanks!
I must admit, despite being a Classics nerd, I have read none of these
books aside from Aristophanes (who I have mixed feelings about although I
generally like him). The Hellenistic and early Roman eras are periods I’ve
generally never been too interested in but I should pick up one of these
recommendations. – I’ve always enjoyed your posts on the Classics most. :-)
This is definitely one of my favourite videos; I keep intending to read
more ancient literature, but haven’t got around to it yet. For some reason
I tend to prefer histories such as the ones by Polybius. So glad I found
your channel x
My favorite thing about Classical Literature is that it reminds us that
humans have had the same interests for many many years. What we find funny,
romantic, depressing – nothing much has changed over the centuries. <3
Ahhhh Jean thank you for reminding me that I really need to pick up some
ancient literature again!
Perfection! So true that once you get into it you realise just how little
humans’ interests, taste in literature, and sense of humour have changed
over time!
Really? CAAUSE classical literature makes me zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Except
for Lucretius and Homer and Plato and Caesar and Suetonius, et al. Nah
jokes, they’re all pretty good and I might try some of these books too.
Maybe I’ll leave Caesar off my favourite authors list though, cause
he talks in third person; he sounds kind of like a dick. MoontyCrabNebula
did not approve of his straight to the point, propaganda prose. :3
The idea that any national lit, be it ancient Greek, or Latin for instance,
shd be something to be feared, doesn’t show up in my radar. I read lots of
Plato’s dialogues, Aesop’s Fables, a collection of Greek myths, &
Lysistrata on my own, outside of school. In school I got Oedipus Rex.
Who’s afraid of the big bad book? 😀 What’s considered hard in classical
literature??
Love the way people say society is in decline with the increasing number of
dirty jokes etc, but those people clearly have just led a very sheltered
life.
This was really interesting and all these books are going on my wishlist!
“fart jokes” I’m in. hahaha my favorite classic is The Odissey, I really
enjoy greek mythology!
This was great! You’ve definitely inspired me to go read some classical
literature
I was charmed by this!
George Orwell also advises in “Politics and the English Language” to use
the Anglo-Saxon words over the latin etc like Tolkien.
the reason it’s La Leche League is because my San Diego High School
classmate, Laura Sims, invented it to support breast feeding and there are
tons of Mexicans around and not a single Roman, Norman French or Ange or
Saxon or…just us mutts
Excellent, again.
