As part of a Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Central Region on-call contract for traffic engineering services, Timmons Group’s Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) team has conducted fields reviews and a technology assessment aimed at improving the U.S. Route 1 corridor in Stafford County. This stretch of Route 1, just north of Fredericksburg, is an alternate route for frequently congested I-95. “This corridor will benefit from advanced communications and technologies to enhance corridor operations, safety, and help reduce congestion throughout this stretch of the I-95 corridor,” said Martha Morecock Eddy, Senior ITS Consultant for Timmons Group. “This project is the first of several arterial corridors to be evaluated as part of VDOT’s Smart Road Technology Program, and we look forward to contributing to this effort.”

Timmons Group’s team evaluated a variety of potential improvements along the corridor, including signal communication upgrades, improved corridor operations, and technological improvements such as closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, uninterruptible power supply (UPS), emergency vehicle pre-emption, conflict monitors, and other technologies. Attention will also be devoted to previously developed VDOT guidance documents, such as incident management plans and integrated corridor management plans.

Timmons Group has held an on-call term contract for traffic engineering services with VDOT’s Central Region (which includes the Richmond and Fredericksburg Districts) since 2011. During that period, the Timmons Group team has completed over 100 tasks orders for a variety of services including: corridor studies, intersection improvements, roundabout evaluations, design and review of traffic signals, guardrail evaluation, lighting studies, roadway safety improvements, and traffic engineering related studies and/or analyses.
