Yale, Apple Teachers Say Consider Math Comics for School
Las Vegas, Nevada (PRWEB) February 09, 2015
Yamie Chess Math Comics (http://www.yamiechess.com/mathcomics) a math learning eBook series for middle school students on mobile phones and tablets, being distributed February 10 by Google Play and Follett Shelf to 70,000 school districts, libraries and classrooms throughout the U.S., have been assessed by a leading Yale University educator and 3 Apple Distinguished Educators.
“The Yamie Chess comics do a great job of motivating kids to learn math through cute stories about a fantastical world populated by entertaining characters representing dark and light chess pieces,” said Yale University statistician Professor Michelle Lacey, PhD (Yale), a U.S. Government scientist and Yale University Fellow, who works at Tulane University Department of Mathematics.
“The mathematical topics are taught through clear examples, and the scope of each comic strikes a nice balance between mathematical content and fun narratives that are likely to keep children engaged. Furthermore, for those readers who are really interested in learning about chess strategy there’s plenty to think about in these comics,” continues the Yale University expert, who explains her in-depth criticism at the parents area of Yamie Chess’ site at http://www.yamiechess.com/yale
The Yale review comes less than 12 months after School Library Journal awarded Yamie Chess the School Library Journal Best Education Pick at the American International Toy Fair in New York City.
Edited by Caltech engineer Gerardo Morabito and 4-time New Jersey and Pennsylvania chess champion, Tom Bartell, an American International Master of chess, the first 5 math eBooks from Yamie Chess teach children as young as 7 years old basic algebra, geometry and number skills, through a cartoon world where each character is a chess piece.
“Math classrooms require a great deal of reading to solve problems and Yamie Chess’ comic book provides students with an opportunity to dive right into a magical math world,” said Monica Burns, a nationally-respected Apple Distinguished Educator with many years of classroom experience in the New York Department of Education. Ms Burns, whose full review is available at http://www.yamiechess.com/apple is a regular contributor to George Lucas’ Educational Foundation, Edutopia, in addition to Apple Education events.
Another Apple Distinguished Educator, Kirsten Van Niekerk from the University of Cape Town who leads the mathematics department at Dulwich College Suzhou in China, has independently voiced support for Yamie Chess’s new math comics, citing strong learning value in the education resource available to over 51+ countries through Google Play on February 10 to download for smartphones and tablet computers.
Available soon on Barnes & Noble Nook, Kobo and Singapore/Malaysia based platform e-Sentral to South East Asian countries, the first 5 titles in the Yamie Chess math series are: “A Tale of Sleepy Numbers” (numbers & operations), “The Math King of Dallas” (linear algebra and fundamentals of geometry), “He’s Arithmetic, I’m Geometric” (math sequences and series), “No Calculators, Please!” (arithmetic and long division) and “Yamie Chess: The Adventures of Tigermore and the Mind Angels”, which is the eBook version to Yamie Chess’ MIT- endorsed softcover math book aligned to the NCTM Curriculum Focal Points.
